How to Hang a Banner Without a Wall

Whether large or small, banners are designed to be displayed using a variety of techniques and accessories. But don't worry, hanging a banner doesn't require any heavy duty tools or complicated accessories.

From walls to ceilings, and fences and poles, banners are incredibly versatile for hanging in almost any situation. In this article, we'll take a look at the most common display methods, hanging accessories, applicable surfaces, hanging banners with and without grommets, and other tips to maximize the prominence and lifespan of your banner.

What are Grommets and Pole Pockets? Will they affect how I hang my banner?

Your hanging method depends on whether or not your banner has grommets, pole pockets, or neither of those. Grommets are metal rings inserted along the edges and corners of a banner designed to make it easier to hang the banner. If you simply punched a hole in your banner, it would most likely tear it when it's hung. Grommets reinforce the hole and when done right, allow for hanging without tearing. At Signs.com we offer free grommet placement with all of our banners, but it certainly isn't necessary if you don't want it. A pole pocket is when the banner is folded over on itself and sewn to create a pocket that's open on one or both ends. Pole pockets are used to slip over a pole or thread a rope through and hang.

A properly secured banner will not only increase visibility, but will also ensure your banner lasts as long as it should. It will also prevent damage that may occur otherwise. We've broken the hanging methods into two sections for easier navigation- hanging a banner with grommets and hanging a banner without grommets. We'll explain the accessories used, and then go into the best places to hang your banner.

Note: We'll use 'banners' as a general term that applies to vinyl banners , fabric banners , and mesh banners .

How to Hang a Banner With Grommets

The best way to hang your banner that has grommets is to use display accessories, which expand the functionality for hanging your banner in a range of situations while ensuring that your banner is secure. These accessories work great with grommets and other banner finish options, which you can learn more about in our post about banner options.

Bungee Cords

Bungee cords are excellent for pulling your banner tight when displayed. Simply hook one end of the cord onto the grommet (included for free with all of our banners) and the other to an anchor point of your choosing. Make sure there is adequate tension from each bungee to pull the banner evenly across its surface.

Nylon Rope

Nylon rope is one of the most common ways to hang banners, whether or not your banner has grommets. Loop through the grommets or feed through pole pockets to secure banners to posts, fences, or suspend them from ceilings of overhangs. Metal chains, fishing line, and other durable materials can also be used in place of rope but we do not offer these on our website as we've found rope to be the best of these types of hanging accessories.

Hanging Clips

Hanging clips, commonly referred to as carabiners, can be easily clipped through grommets, which can then clip to anchor points or objects. Carabiners can be used for both permanent or temporary display. These make a great option for displaying a banner on a chain link fence, as the carabiners can hook into the fence and to the sign through the metal grommets.

Zip Ties

Zip ties are designed for temporarily displaying your banner on fences (chain link fences are the best for this). We recommend using zip ties for casual, outdoor events (fairs, food truck advertising, grand openings, sales, birthday parties, and more)! Zip ties are also more commonly used for longer periods of time as they are more permanent in nature than bungee cords, rope or clips. To hang your banner using zip ties, simply put the zip tie through the grommet and the anchor point of wherever you're hanging it then secure it by attaching the ends of the zip tie together. To remove it, simply cut the zip ties.

Suction Cups and Hooks

Suction cups allow you to hang banners on non-porous (smooth), flat surfaces. The most common application surface for these is glass. Hooks extend from the suction cups that can go right into the grommets of your banner. It's extremely important to mention that suction cups are not meant for large or heavy banners. The weight of larger banners can be too much for the suction ability of this display method.

How to Hang a Banner Without Grommets

While there are lots of ways to hang a banner with grommets, there are also a few ways to do it without.

Velcro

Velcro adhesive strips can be included to attach to the back of your banner. The strips come in two parts; one part adheres to the surface you want to attach your banner to and the other adheres to the back. If you want to display your banner on, or wrapped around, a surface, Velcro strips will get the job done. Velcro is especially convenient if you want to continually swap out banners in the same display position or if you want a banner without grommets around the edges. Velcro is great for hanging your banner on walls indoors.

Pole Pockets

Like we said above, pole pockets are when the banner is folded over on itself and sewn. You can slide the banner over a pole and suspend it on both ends- picture the start of a parade where two people are holding a suspended banner- or thread something through the pole pocket, like a rope or cord. You can have pole pockets sewn on all four sides of your banner or just one, the choice is yours.

Magnets

If you've got a metal surface, strong magnets are an option.

Best Places to Hang Banners

Directly On A Wall

One of the most popular ways to hang a banner is on a flat wall. Velcro adhesive strips are your best choice for temporarily displaying a banner on a smooth wall. Banners displayed this way will look flush against a wall.

If you need to hang your banner on a brick wall or similar surface, we'd recommend using screws or hooks. This method will require you to drill into the wall, so make sure you only do this as a more permanent option. We recommend using washers with screws so the screws will fit through the grommet yet still provide needed stability. The other options for displaying banners on walls can include double sided tape or even certain glues. Due to potential damage to your banner and the permanent nature of these methods we don't recommend either.

Suspended Between Posts

Suspending or hanging a banner between posts is another common display method. We'd recommend including grommets on all four corners to allow the banner to be pulled taut between posts. This can be accomplished using rope, zip ties, or screws to secure the banner (wooden posts are ideal for using screws). Hooks can also be installed into the posts to utilize the included grommets of your banner. For larger banners we recommend using a middle post. This will help keep your banner taut, providing the best appearance and helping avoid potential damage in extremely windy conditions. We always recommend taking down banners in extreme weather conditions while mesh banners will be the best option for areas that are often windy.

Hanging From an Awning or Ceiling

Banners are often hung from a higher point using rope or string. Grommets are the obvious choice, with rope or string being used for the hanging. Make sure the rope is long enough to feed through the grommets and back to the anchor point of the rope. As noted elsewhere, metal chains, fishing line and the like can also be used. However, we have found rope to be your best option. The aesthetics of the different materials will also play a role in which one you choose.

Displayed on a Flagpole

Displaying a banner on a flagpole can be accomplished using either grommets or a pole pocket. With grommets, use metal hanging clips or zip ties to secure to a pole. Remember to make sure the pole is designed to fit the ¼" clips. Pole pockets are ideal for sliding a flagpole through the top or bottom of the banner. Though in both of these cases this is not the recommended use and we offer custom flags that can be displayed on flagpoles.

Note: Our pole pockets are 3" in diameter.

Hanging on a Fence

Banners are commonly displayed on chain link fences using grommets and zip ties or hanging clips; pole pockets can also be used to secure a banner to a fence with rope being fed through the pocket(s). Fences that aren't chain linked can have banners attached using rope and an anchor point on the fence (this obviously varies depending on the type of fence).

Hanging on a Table

Hanging a banner on a table can be done in multiple ways. Include grommets on the four corners (and around the outside edge if necessary) to secure the banner so that it hangs in front of the table. If your banner has a pole pocket, rope or string can be used to feed through the pocket to secure the banner to the table.
